Brigitte Macron placed a hand on her husband’s face in a gesture that has been interpreted as a sign of rejection.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron urged the public not to waste time on interpretations of a supposedly scandalous incident that occurred upon his arrival in Hanoi. “This is all nonsense… We don’t have time to waste,” he told French media covering his visit to Vietnam.

When the French aircraft landed at the airport in the Vietnamese capital, cameras captured the moment when, as the door opened, Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, placed her hands on his face in what could be interpreted as a sign of rejection.

After the push, Macron turned around and realized the plane door was open and that what had happened had been seen from outside. At that moment, he smiled and waved as if nothing had happened.

The video has since gone viral in France. Initially, the French presidency denied the incident had occurred, but later acknowledged the video’s authenticity while downplaying its significance.

The French president said he was “joking” with his wife and criticized the interpretations of the incident, describing them as “all kinds of theories” that turn anything into “a geoplanetary catastrophe.”

Macron recalled a past episode during a train trip to Kyiv with the leaders of Germany and the United Kingdom, when a tissue on the table was claimed by social media accounts to be a bag of drugs.

He also referenced the recent controversy over how he shook hands with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a European leaders’ summit in Tirana, saying that too had been misinterpreted and criticized.

“All of this shows a bit of the world we live in. I think we don’t have time to waste,” the French president said.
